Microsoft Operations Management Engineer

Ortman Consulting is looking for a candidate who will is responsible for delivering Microsoft Operations Management (SCOM/MOM) Management technology to support a designated set of strategic Enterprise customers. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering Microsoft Operations Management (SCOM/MOM) support in various Enterprise environments.  The ideal candidate should have at least 4-5 years of experience with SCCM and SCOM. This candidate should possess a solid working knowledge of Microsoft platforms products Windows 2008/2012 Operating Systems. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a passion and proficiency for advanced System Management skills to impact systems architectures, investigate system-wide technical problems, and develop new features. The successful candidate will also have experience with the evaluation, design, and upgrading of several technologies used to create, manage, update, monitor, and report on Windows desktop configurations.

Essential Functions:

  • Ongoing maintenance & administration of System Center Operations Manager
  • Adherence to policies, processes and procedures within your areas of responsibility
  • Assistance with execution of projects related to areas of responsibility
  • Document supporting policies, processes and procedures within your areas of responsibilities
  • Provide 3rd level support to our internal support staff and customers
  • Continue proficiencies on emerging technologies through self-study and internal training
  • Meet all internal certification standards for skill sets identified within your realm of responsibility
  • Available for after-hours critical escalations and project work as assigned

Responsibilities also include:

  • Oversee the rollout of monitoring software updates
  • Oversee the rollout of new and updated monitoring scripts
  • Identify, research, and resolve technical problems associated to monitoring systems
  • Respond to telephone calls, email and personnel requests for technical support associated to monitoring systems. Document, track, and monitor the incident to ensure a timely resolution
  • Manage the installation of new software releases, system upgrades, and patch installs that resolves monitoring related software problems
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and general support of monitoring systems
  • Develop and update RTS documentation for assigned OSS applications and systems
  • Routinely review monitoring systems and services to ensure stability and security
  • Assist in interpretation of diagnostic data obtained from monitoring solutions
  • Provide escalation support to Implementation team for standard monitoring implementation
  • Provide implementation support for custom monitoring orders
  • Provide technical consultation to individual contributors and customers in areas of expertise
  • Provide Capacity, Performance and Availability reports for assigned systems
  • Define and recommend monitoring standards for fault-detection, availability, capacity and performance trending for assigned applications and services
  • Develop and distribute trend reports detailing availability, performance & capacity metrics for assigned applications and services
  • Engineer methods to optimize the availability, capacity, performance and cost of assigned applications and services
  • Analyze, define, develop, test and implement monitoring standards for platforms and applications utilizing relevant scripting languages

Critical Skills Include:

  • 3+ years of broad-based IT experience with technical knowledge of network, environmental, hardware, storage, operating systems and applications
  • 3+ years of customer-service experience (service-industry or non-technical field acceptable) preferred
  • Bachelors or Associates degree
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to efficiently prioritize and organize competing work demands with little oversight
  • Strong working knowledge of Internet networking technologies and principals including TCP/IP and DNS
  • Proven ability to absorb, master and leverage emerging technologies
  • Broad working knowledge of Microsoft platforms and technologies including IIS, SQL Server and Exchange
  • Strong working knowledge of VBScript, SNMP, batch scripting, PowerShell and Transact-SQL development
  • Strong working knowledge of Windows server Operating System, clustering, SQL, VMI and IIS
  • Strong working knowledge SCOM solution Accelerators, SCOM Connectors and the SCOM Connector Framework, and model based architecture in SCOM 2007
  • Proven ability to work in both a team environment and independently

  • Create, tune and administer System Center 2012 Operations Manager Management packs
  • Author design documents, build procedure, test procedures
  • Have strong familiarity with running system center products in a secured environment which is compliant with DISA STIG
  • Familiarity with Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine manager is key
  • Solid understanding of Active Directory (AD) including Multi-Forest, Multi-domain, and Group policy to include how technologies are impacted by AD elements
  • Familiarity with System Center 2012 Service Manger is a plus
  • Experience with Desired State Configuration is a plus

This role requires both broad and deep technology knowledge and the ability to architect a solution by mapping a customer business problem to an end-to-end technology solution. The individual will diagnose and correct performance problems. Each consulting engagement is customized to serve the client’s unique needs. The role requires a technically strong Consultant who is resourceful, confident under pressure, and has demonstrated skill in design and deployment of Infrastructure solutions.
